Santa Sofia, chamada pelos turcos de Ayasofya, é o símbolo de Istambul. Foi construída durante o mandato de Justiniano entre 532 e 537 e é uma das obras-primas da arte bizantina.
Hagia Sophia, called Ayasofya by the Turks, is the symbol of Istanbul. It was built during Justinian’s rule between 532 and 537 and is one of the masterpieces of Byzantine art.
Construída em Costantinopla, entre 527 e 532, durante o reinado do Imperador Justiniano (527-565), a Basílica de Santa Sofia foi dedicada à Sabedoria de Deus e daí sua denominação latinizada de “Santa Sofia” e no grego “Hagia Sophia”.
Built in Costantinople, between 527 and 532, during the reign of Emperor Justinian (527-565), the Basilica of Saint Sophia was dedicated to the Wisdom of God and hence its Latinized name “Saint Sophia” and in Greek “Hagia Sophia”.
A denominação de basílica relaciona-se ao fato do poder civil, representado pelo imperador (basileus em grego) ter ordenado a sua construção e tal gesto foi imortalizado no mosaico presente na basílica de San Vitale, em Ravena na Itália, onde o imperador Justiniano aparece acompanhado de seu séquito (militares e políticos) e entrega ao bispo Maximiano (bispo de Constantinopla) um recipiente que contém ouro, simbolizando o financiamento da igreja.
The name basilica is related to the fact that the civil power, represented by the emperor (basileus in Greek) ordered its construction and this gesture was immortalized in the mosaic present in the basilica of San Vitale, in Ravenna, Italy, where the emperor Justinian appears accompanied by his entourage (military and politicians) and gives Bishop Maximian (Bishop of Constantinople) a container containing gold, symbolizing the financing of the church.
A monumentalidade do espaço criado em Santa Sofia, como, em seu tempo, a riqueza cromática dos seus altares, mosaicos e materiais, nos quais a simbólica luz reverbera como dando razão à afirmação de que “o que radiante vem de dentro”, justificam a exclamação de Justiniano ao vê-la acabada:
The monumentality of the space created in Santa Sofia, as well as, in its time, the chromatic richness of its altars, mosaics and materials, in which the symbolic light reverberates as giving reason to the statement that “what radiant comes from within”, justify the Justinian’s exclamation upon seeing it finished:
“Glória a Deus que me julgou digno de executar esta obra! Venci-te, Salomão!”
“Glory to God who judged me worthy of carrying out this work! I beat you, Solomon!”
É formada por uma série de pequenas janelas, e o revestimento dourado dos mosaicos e dos mármores também contribuem para o intenso e fascinante efeito luminoso.

Santa Sofia é considerada um dos maiores exemplos ainda existentes da arquitetura bizantina, um esplendor de grande valor artístico em todos os aspectos. Ela foi na antiguidade uma grande obra arquitetônica, tendo influenciado o mundo ortodoxo, católico e islâmico.
Saint Sophia is considered one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture, a splendor of great artistic value in all aspects. In ancient times, it was a great architectural work, having influenced the Orthodox, Catholic and Islamic world.
Situada no ponto mais alto de Istambul, Santa Sofia define a panorâmica da cidade. Seu quatro minaretes e sua cúpula de mais de 30 metros de diâmetro são a imagem mais característica da metrópole turca.

No segundo andar também se conserva a tumba de Enrique Dandolo, duque veneziano que morreu em Costantinopla em 1205.
The tomb of Enrique Dandolo, a Venetian duke who died in Costantinople in 1205, is also preserved on the second floor.
