Delvaux is the oldest luxury handbag and accessory brand in the world

Delvaux is the oldest luxury handbag and accessory brand in the world! The Belgian mark was founded by Charles Delvaux in 1829, a year before Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands. This spirit of freedom and innovation helped to shape and drive not only the Delvaux brand but also the country. Belgium, then, had an era of significant growth, becoming the fourth largest economic power in the world in 1901. With such importance on the world stage, Delvaux has spread throughout the world as synonymous with success, luxury and excellence.

Delvaux has a history of heritage and tradition more relevant than major brands existing on the market today. The brand has already handcrafted over 3,000 handbag designs and continues to create contemporary classics filled with elegance and attitude. Since 1938, he has documented each design and project in a book entitled “The Golden Book.”

Below, the advertisements of the 70’s and 80’s highlight the brand’s elegant and innovative spirit:

Real TitleUntitled-3

Delvaux received in 1883 the title of official supplier of the court. The prestigious title was awarded by King Leopold II, the monarch who proclaimed the famous phrase: “The Nation must be as great in its art as in its commerce and industry.”

The title of official supplier of the court was chosen and awarded every five years by the monarch of Belgium, and is a certificate of the highest quality of Delvaux products. This quality has been maintained until today, thus guaranteeing its tradition in excellence.

In addition to his legacy of elegance and excellence, Delvaux also carries the Surrealism as part of the Maison’s design legacy, thanks to the influence of great Belgian artists such as René Magritte.

The Surrealist Influence

René Magritte was known for challenging pre-conditioned perceptions about reality, as in the famous Ceci n’est pas une pipe, which in Portuguese means “This is not a pipe.” Well, if it’s not a pipe, what would it be? In fact, it is the representation of the pipe and not the object itself. Rene asks about what is accepted by us as “real”. Great exercise to think about the present day, like laws, socially imposed rules and so on …Untitled-2
